At Snow Valley Ski Club in Edmonton, skiing is more than just a winter activity—it’s about community.
For the past 13 years, the Masters Racing Program has brought together a range of adult skiers–anywhere from their early twenties to well into their seventies–and has created a unique space for both skill improvement and social connections.
Paul Robinson, Assistant General Manager of Snow Valley and Masters Racing Program Director explains: “It’s not just about getting faster. It’s about having fun, meeting new people, and challenging yourself at your own pace. Some people are in the program because they ski raced when they were younger. Others join with no racing experience at all, but are looking for a new challenge and most importantly to improve their own skiing and have fun while they’re doing it.”
Many skiers at Edmonton’s Snow Valley reach a point where they want more from their ski days at the small community hill. After mastering the usual runs, they’re looking for something new, something that keeps the excitement alive. The Masters Racing Program offers exactly that—a new dimension to skiing the modest slopes of Snow Valley. This program really opens up a whole new world.
“Many people feel they reach a point where they’ve plateaued at Snow Valley or even at skiing in general” explains Paul. “Joining Masters Racing adds that extra challenge and top level coaching they need to keep improving their technique and keep hitting the slopes. It breathes new life into skiing for them!”
Participants have the option to enter races at Snow Valley and other hills, but many are satisfied just participating in the weekly Wednesday evening or Thursday afternoon training sessions. “Many of our racers enter competitions, but others are here simply for the camaraderie and the opportunity for technical improvement of their skiing,” Paul says. “There’s no pressure. You can join formal races if you want to and we will definitely help you to be fast and competitive. But ultimately, the main goal of the program is personal progress and fun.”
Beyond the skiing itself, the program has a strong social component. “The friendships formed here are just as important as the skills we build,” Paul adds. “It’s part of what makes the program special.”
The inclusivity of the Masters Racing Program has helped create a diverse and close-knit group of skiers.
