More Hill Opening in Time for Winterfest!

Snow continues to pile up as snow guns run around the clock.  North Hill will open Thursday which would mean the Rainbow Triple Chair will open, too.  More terrain means more good news!Winterfest SM Cover

Be sure to join us for Winterfest this weekend, December 9, 10 and 11 including our inaugural Illuminate the Hill, presented by ATB.   Click on the image to see the poster.

The last runs to open will be on the south end of Snow Valley: Wish Bone, Southpaw, Old Road and Klaus’ Corner.

Now if only the temperature was a little milder, we could welcome the hundreds of school kids we normally host each weekday!

No Snow? No Problem!

It’s been a wonky fall: 10cm snow on October 18 and the next two weeks take us from Summer, to Fall to Winter!  In the event that Snow Valley is unable to open in time for the start of your Lesson Program, we do have a plan:

If your lesson program starts on November 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 or 24:

  • You will be notified by e-mail of a cancellation due to lack of snow, a minimum 72h in advance.
  • If you are notified, you can book a make-up lesson in advance for any Sunday at 3p or Monday at 715p throughout the Fall, Winter or Spring Sessions. Booking will be on a first come first served basis.

Keep your fingers crossed (click on the image below for the most up to date weather)…

Excellent Conditions Despite Wonky Weather

Snow Valley has experienced some strange weather in it’s 66 years but this year has to stand out as one of the weirdest.

We’ve had heat, rain, snow and sub arctic cold.   And that was just last week!  All kidding aside the variance in the weather can be challenging for us to get around but it’s not that bad on the slopes.

Conditions of the snow vary with the temperature and humidity.  That, however, should not prevent you from enjoying the experience of riding the slopes on skis and or snowboards.  The key to survival is layering and it’s not new.

Begin with a base layer, a mid layer then a top layer.  What has changed are the materials and therefore the number of layers has also changed.  Where wool was once king, breathable man-made fabrics rule the roost.  Thin materials that are also much lighter.

Your equipment should also be checked at the conditions change, as well.  It’s important to keep an eye on edges, bindings, boots, helmets along with mitts and snow pants.

This is winter in Alberta, weirder than most this season, but winter just the same.

So get out there, grit your teeth and embrace the outdoors in comfort!
